Benefits of Cleaning Air Conditioning Vents
The less dirt in your air vents the better! Your HVAC system circulates air throughout your entire house, and that means the dirt on your vents will enter people’s lungs, no matter where they are in your home. Cleaning them will improve your indoor air quality as well as reduce allergens.
What You’ll Need
Ready to get started? Here are the tools you’ll need:
Vacuum
Your regular vacuum should get the job done, but make sure you have a hose and attachments to really get in there. If you need something more powerful, you can also rent a heavy-duty vacuum from the hardware store.
Scrub Brush Or Cloths
You’ll need something to wipe off any grime that’s collected, and a scrub brush or cleaning cloth can do that.
Screw Driver
If you want to clean more thoroughly, you can unscrew the air vent and clean the ducts below.
Cleaning Process
First, turn off the power to your HVAC system. You don’t want to get hit with a blast of dusty air while you’re in the middle of cleaning. Next, unscrew the vents and give them a thorough cleaning with your vacuum and scrub brush. If they’re really dirty, you can use soap and water to clean them.
After you’ve finished the vent, you can clean the air duct walls below. Go ahead and reach in to knock the loose dirt and dust off the walls. Then, get out your vacuum and suck up all the dirt you’ve knocked free.
When you’ve finished with the vacuum, it’s time to use your cleaning cloth to pick up anything that’s been left on the vent walls. Use a damp cloth and get as much as you can. You’d be surprised at how dirty your vents can be!
Lastly, you’ll need to clean the area around the vent. You’ve most likely gotten dust and dirt on the floor, and you want to make sure that you’ve cleaned that up too.
