As air conditioners are meant to cool the air, it can be disconcerting to see yours leaking water. Obviously it’s not supposed to do this, so what should you do about it? Do you need an air conditioner replacement?
There are several different factors that could be causing your air conditioner to leak:
- If your cooling system drains using gravity, drain lines might be clogged, particularly in the elbows. This can make it impossible for condensate to flow freely outside your home.
- If your cooling system has a condensate pump, you might be looking at pump failure that’s causing water to back up and overflow your drain pan.
- If you have an old air conditioner, your drain pan might be rotted and full of holes.
What You Can Do
Whatever the cause of your AC leak, the best bet is to act fast.
If you have clogged condensate drains, you can clear up the blockage by pouring a solution of bleach and water down the drain line to clean out built-up mold and slime. Take note, however, that this solution may corrode metal drain lines.
If you have a broken condensate pump, the best solution for you is to have it replaced.
If you have a leaking drain pan, you don’t necessarily need a replacement, but at the very least you’ll need to have it repaired by an air conditioner and heater repair expert.
